In the mid 1980's Congress established the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP). The Program was established to make compensation easier for those injured by adverse reactions to vaccinations. An excise tax was imposed upon the manufacture of vaccines and revenues placed into a fund to compensate those suffering complications of vaccination. The monies in the fund now exceed 2.5 billion dollars. Entitlement to and the amount of compensation is determined by the United States Court of Federal Claims in Washington, DC. In addition to the Program, other avenues are available to assist families suffering the results of a vaccine related injury. These avenues may include the traditional remedies available through medical malpractice and products liability actions.
